Estrella Galicia’s Aron Canet has taken Moto3 pole position at the Sachsenring MotoGP round, going a quarter of a second quicker than series leader Joan Mir with Nico Bulega completing the front row.
Mir had been sitting pretty in top spot with 15 minutes left and a rain shower looked like it had ended the session early. The Spaniard thought it was in the bag and sat calmly in his garage but exploratory laps after five minutes from Bo Bendsneyder and Danny Kent proved the track had dried.
The pack left pitlane en masse and it was Canet who made the best of the traffic, banging in a 1’26.688 while Mir was still putting on his helmet. It proved too late for the Leopard Racing man who could so nothing as time ran out and he had to settle for second with Bulega improving his pace to a 1’26.981.
Marcos Ramirez took fourth placw and is half a second off the pace with Tony Arbolino in fifth and Romano Fenati - also late to the party - completing row two. Scotland’s John McPhee took advantage and came from the middle of row five to end in 10th, one behind Enea Bastiannini.
Kent ended the session in 16th place but yesterday’s 12-place grid penalty means he will start from 28th.
