Michael Ruben Rinaldi will undergo assessments ahead of the next round of the 2023 WorldSBK Championship at Imola to clear him to race following his accident during the final race at Donington Park over the weekend.
Rinaldi was caught up in a high-speed smash triggered by Tom Sykes high-siding directly in front of him, the Italian being struck by another rider as he attempted to avoid the spiralling BMW M 1000 RR in front of him.
After receiving medical attention at the side of the track while the race was red flagged, Rinaldi was taken to the medical centre and given a tentative diagnosis that showed no serious injuries.
It’s a diagnosis that has since been confirmed upon receiving further assessment via an MRI scan which his Aruba.it Ducati team confirmed results of ‘normal brain function’.
However, Rinaldi will still need to be given the all-clear to race at his home Imola round in just over a week’s time as a consequence of the concussion he received in the incident.
"Michael Rinaldi underwent a follow-up magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan (2 days ago) to rule out any long-term damage," read a team statement.
"The result was normal. Next Thursday (before the event), the rider will undergo all the required functional medical tests, in order to assess the consequences of the concussion and confirm that he is clear to ride at his home round."
The Italian is not the only rider on the road to recovery following the Donington Park incident, with Sykes still in hospital after being diagnosed with ten rib fractures and injuries to his thorax and ankle.
