Organisers for the Southern 100 road race on the Isle of Man have confirmed two people have died following in an incident involving two riders, a marshal and a spectator.

Practice for the 1100cc class was underway at the time of the incident, with organisers announcing on Twitter that the session had been red flagged after a 'serious incident'.

Following the cancellation of the remainder of Tuesday's programme, which takes place at the 4.8-mile Billown Circuit road course close to Castletown on the Isle of Man, a statement was issued announcing the casualties.

Organisers have not confirmed details of the fatalities, only to state that the incident involved two riders, a marshal and a spectator.

UPDATE: Police have confirmed one rider and one marshal - both male - were killed in the incident. No details regarding their identity have been made public.

Organisers have also announced the remainder of the Southern 100 event has been cancelled

"The Southern 100 can confirm that a serious incident occurred during tonight’s qualifying session on the Billown Course.

"The incident involved two riders, a marshal and a spectator and it is with deep sadness that the Southern 100 regrets to announce that this incident has resulted in two fatalities.

"The Southern 100 pass on their deepest sympathy to the families, loved ones, and friends of those involved.

"At this time, the club is unable to provide any further details of those involved in the incident and the current focus of the organiser is to support those involved."

The Coroner of Inquests has been informed. A further statement will be released in due course."
