TT 2011: Generator failure scuppers Martin

Relentless Suzuki's Guy Martin's quest for a TT victory remains after the he coasted to a halt on lap five of yesterday's Superbike race. The Kirmington rider was in secnd place, some 18 seconds adrift of race leader John McGuinness, when the battery lost power due to a generator failure.

Although never outside the top four, Martin was never really challenging for the race win despite posting his first 130mph laps of the Mountain Course. An opening lap of 130.126mph saw him in fourth, five seconds off the lead and although he moved up to third a lap later with a speed of 130.309mph, the gap to the leaders had grown to 13 seconds.

With race leader Bruce Anstey dropping out on lap three, Martin was up to second and here he remained until he dropped down the Mountain towards the end of lap 5 when the Suzuki lost power due to the aforementioned generator failure, and he eventually retired between Hillberry and Cronk ny Mona.

"That was a disappointing end to what looked like a certain second place, but that’s the TT for you. We got off to a great start and were well within striking distance of John on that opening lap. From there I just kept it steady and felt pretty comfortable," said Martin.

"After the second stop I knew John was going to be near impossible to catch, but you gotta keep trying, and we were well in control in second place. I was looking around the dash frantically trying to see what had gone wrong and when I got to Keppel Gate I knew the job was… well you know the rest. It’s time to re-group and get the head in gear for Monday where we get two more chances.”
