A last-ditch move by Carlos Checa on Max Neukirchner has handed Lorenzo Lanzi the race one win in Valencia World Superbikes.
Neukirchner had taken the race by the scruff of the neck and left the field for dead, until four laps from the end when his tyre started to go away from him. This left Checa, who has scythed his way through the pack, to catch the German.
Checa, a former MotoGP race winner, caught up to the Alstare Suzuki on the last lap and attempted a pass, which saw him lose the front and take Neukirchner with him.
Troy Bayliss rolled over the line in second wih Corser third as the rest of a decimated field followed him. Noriyuki Haga began a string of top-level crashes after four laps. Kagayama was the next to go, followed by Xaus and Fabrizio. Max Biaggi went off the track after outbraking himself, but rejoined in last place.
