Mark 'Dogs' Davies was crowned the first ever Thundersport GB Champion at Pembrey this weekend as he claimed three wins from three in the GP2 class.

Davies' only challenges came from two Northern Irish riders in David Craig and Chris McAloran who returned from injury to stick it on pole.

Craig, who currently leads the Irish 250cc Championship spent most of the races battling it out with McAloran as 'Dogs' Davies roared home to victory and claim the Thundersport title.

Barry Utting, who before the weekend was Davies' closest rival, retired on Saturday and despite a third and fourth on the Sunday, he has now been pushed back behind the returning Chris McAloran who had an encouraging come back.

After winning the title, I caught up with Mark Davies and asked the Champ his thoughts on the season so far and his future plans....
 
Firstly a big well done Mark, you had a break from racing before this year.... What made you come back and what made you choose the Thundersport GP2 class?
 
I was trying to get a deal together to race in the KTM Series at BSB after a two-year lay off, it's hard to get back into racing, so I thought the KTM series would be a way back racing,but it all fell through at the last min.
A good friend and ex sponsor Dean Hobson of SIGNS XTRA had just bought a 1997 TZ 250 to do track days on.
He asked me if I fancied doing a meeting on the TZ, so i thought why not, I'd always wanted to have a go on one, we just choose the thundersport meeting because it was a local event at Oulton Park and my old buddy was riding Dicko... and he was the reigning champ so off we went..
 
It's something like eleven wins on the trot for you now, you've wanted to get other riders over to have a go at beating you, what is the key to keeping 250cc motorcycle racing alive?
 
i think anybody who's rode a 250 know's how good they are to ride they are the ultimate bike to race I've raced most things and without a doubt they are the best... a proper race bike. I suppose it all boils down to what happens at GP level.. that's the main key..
 
You're an ex-British Championship rider, what does Thundersport GB offer riders that are looking to either move up to that next level or riders that want track time and just want to race?
 
I think it's a great series and Dave & Bernadette Stewart do a mega job organizing meetings, the track times mega, pratice qualifying and 3 races per weekend no other meetings give you that,and the tv's coverage is great too.
We have  got a number of new sponsors this season all because of the TV coverage you can really use that to your advantage.... I also think there's a great mix of riders in the class, you have got the young lads coming though and the more experinced riders who the up and coming lads can judge themselves against, it's a mega building block, start winning at this level and you will not be far off the pace at BSB..
 
What next for Mark 'Dogs' Davies, what are your intentions for 2009?
 
No real intentions at the minute maybe if we could get the budjet to race at BSB on a Supersport 600 I would like to do that if I could get a mega competitive bike to sit on, or maybe more of the same but do the European 250 championships and come back to retain my title in the Thundersport GP2 class who knows what 2009 holds...
 
Finally, I've been interviewing you all year and I still don't know why they call you 'Dogs', even Chris Walker won't tell me. What's it all about?
 
All I can say is buy Chris Walker's book all the answers are in there...
