South Africa's Kyalami race track is to make a sensational return to the World Superbike calendar in 2009, hosting a race over the May 15-17 weekend.
World Superbikes last went to the track in 2002 when Troy Bayliss won both races. The Gauteng area's government is keen to start promoting the track again to promote sport and tourism in the province.
"The return of the Superbike World Championship to the Gauteng Province is very exciting,” said SBK General Manager Paolo Ciabatti. “We are enthusiastic about this new venture with the Gauteng Provincial Government. This has happened at a magical time, with the championship on the up, and we know that the event in South Africa will prove to be very successful."
"This event will assist in establishing the brand image of Gauteng as a home for competitive sport,” said Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa. “It will attract investment and promote tourism which in turn will help us to grow the economy of province, deal with poverty and unemployment."
