TT 2009: DONALD SMASHES OUTRIGHT LAP RECORD

Relentless Suzuki's Cameron Donald has smashed John McGuinness's Isle of Man TT outright lap record in practice this evening, putting in a 131.457mph circuit on his final flying lap and reckons he got held up.

Donald's lap was set shortly after his team-mate Bruce Anstey made the 130mph club a two-man affair with his 130.129mph lap to join HM Plant Honda's McGuinness. It is now a three-rider club.

"On the way up the mountain, I got held up by two other riders but they were good riders and had really good lines and I thought it was all over and I wouldn't manage a 129mph lap," said the Aussie.

"Then I saw the helicopter following me so I wondered if I was on a good one but I didn't look at the clock as I came down. It was a really comfortable lap to, there's so much grip out there I wouldn't be at all surprised if a few other guys go that fast."

Padgett's Honda's Ian Hutchinson was third fastest on the Superbike with a 129.027 while Steve Plater clocked the fourth quickest time at 128.982 and Guy Martin was fifth on a 128.886.

McGuinness had a relatively quiet practice on the Superbike after breaking down the first time out with a misfure and then cruising round on his second set of laps.

Conor Cummins continues to be the fastest Manxman round the Island, putting in his quickest ever speed, averaging 125.609 while newcomer Steve Mercer blasted to a 119.041 on his Superbike.

Michael Dunlop broke the Supersport lap record this evening, clocking a 126.299 which beats Anstey's time, with Hutchinson second on a 125.182 and Keith Amor third just fractionally slower.

A late lap from Carl Rennie of 126.252 knocked Martin finished off the top of the Superstock pile with after his 126.054. He was followed by Cummins at 124.626 and Anstey fourth with a 124.405.
Jenny Tinmouth got so close to the 110mph mark on both her Supersport and Superbike, clocking 109.674 and 109.702 respectively.
The Sidecar session was stopped early on after a big oil spill from Bray Hill to Quarterbridge and no-one completed a lap.
