Aragon WSBK: Melandri bags provisional pole in Spain

Works Yamaha rider Marco Melandri has continued his World Superbike free practice form this afternoon to take provisional pole position at Motorland Aragon with Carlos Checa in second and Noriyuki Haga picking himself up off the floor to take third on the timesheet.

As was the case in the earlier session, Melandri and Checa scrapped it out for the top spot but Haga, who lobbed it in both sessions, found some pace to be less than half a second off the pace while Leon Camier grabbed fourth with a late lap.

The Alitalia Aprilia man's 2'00.253 just bumped Tom Sykes back to the head of row two but the Huddersfield rider has shown consistent pace and lead the session early on. He is faster than Max Biaggi and Michel Fabrizio while Ayrton Badovini's BMW completes the top eight.

Eugene Laverty, on the second works YZF-R1, is in ninth with Maxine Berger's Supersonic Ducati in tenth, both riders are only three-quarters of a second off the pace while 11th placed Joan Lascorz is just over a second in arrears.

Battered veteran Troy Corser is in 12th with Ruben Xaus, who surprised no one by falling off, in 13th and Leon Haslam in 14th. The Derbyshire man must be at his wits end with the BMW by now, especially given he is only marginally faster than the Pedercini Kawasaki of Mark Aitchison who is next to him.
