Ryan Farquhar dominated the Supertwins race at the Ulster GP and such was the KMR Kawasaki rider’s pace, he led the race on the road, overhauling Ian Lougher, the lead 250cc rider, who’d started some 30 seconds ahead!
Farquhar came under pressure in the early stages from pole setter Wayne Hamilton but as they caught up some of the slower 250s, he pressed home his advantage and Hamilton crashed out at Quarry Bends as he tried to keep in touch.
From that moment on, Farquhar set about closing the gap to Lougher and this he duly did, overtaking the 250 Honda on the penultimate lap. To make it a great race for the KMR Kawasaki team, Adrian Archibald took second with Jamie Hamilton in fourth, John Burrows getting in between the pair for third.
“It was really tough in the early stages,” admitted Farquhar, “I had a few massive slides and Wayne was really hassling me – his bike was slightly better than mine in places and vice versa so I just hung in there whilst the backmarkers were a bit of an issue but I got through and tried to stay in a steady rhythm. Once I got to the front, I just tried to stay out of trouble and the back tyre started to come in so I’m happy enough.”
Lougher was never troubled in the concurrently run 250cc race, forging clear on the opening lap and never coming under any pressure although he did run into a few rear tyre problems in the closing stages. Seamus Elliott went out of second on the final lap and that allowed Denver Robb to take second with Jamie Cowden in third.
