Castrol Honda's Jonathan Rea marmalised the Portimao World Superbike circuit best lap in the final part of today's Superpole, lapping in 1'41.712 compared to the previous best of 1'42.092 set by Cal Crutchlow last year.

The Irishman put together a faultless circuit to bag top spot but was chased hard by Althea Ducati's Carlos Checa, who also went inside the record by a tenth of a second. Eugene Laverty led a Yamaha completion of the front row, taking third ahead of Marco Melandri.

Liberty Ducati's Sylvain Guintoli heads the second row with team-mate Jakub Smrz next to him. PBM Kawasaki's Joan Lascorz is in seventh with the Pata Aprilia of Noriyuki Haga eighth.

Superpole two

Eugene Laverty 1'42.097

Carlos Checa 1'42.186

Sylvain Guintoli 1'42.222

Laverty got to within five one-thousandths of a second of Cal Crutchlow's circuit best lap as he set the fastest time in session two. Checa was once again in attendance at the top and Rea staked his claim to a front-row spot with his fastest lap of the weekend so far.

It was disaster for the rest of the British contingent though, as Tom Sykes, Leon Haslam and Leon Camier all went out. Sykes couldn't keep the speed his team-mate Lascorz found with his final lap while Haslam has struggled to get to a low 1'42s lap as the pace hotted up.

Camier, meanwhile, was the fastest through the first two splits on his last flyer but lost out on the final third. Melandri was the last man through but it was touch and go for the works Yamaha rider. A last lap from Guintoli took him out of the drop zone and into third place, relegating Ayrton Badovini which will make Haslam feel a bit better.

Marco Melandri 1'42.583

Carlos Checa 1'42.657

Eugene Laverty 1'42.671

Rea set the early pace in this afternoon's opening session, lapping in 1'42.708 before Melandri led the charge to the front, taking team-mate Laverty and new champion Checa, who crashed unhurt in the final free practice session, with him. Smrz came close to a top four-spot with his last lap but was a tenth outside.

Pedercini Kawasaki's Mark Aitchison crashed which put him into the relegation zone while a late lap from Camier bounced him from 13th place into the relative safety of eighth. The Kent man's time put Supersonic Ducati's Maxine Berger into the bottom four and Haslam perilously close to going out before he too went back up the order with his last lap.
