Factory Aprilia's Eugene Laverty bounced back from a highside yesterday to set the fastest overall time at the Portimao World Superbike test, going a tenth faster than team-mate Max Biaggi today while Leon Haslam slipped back behind Ayrton Badovini.
Haslam set the pace on days one and two and was also quickest on the qualifying tyre, which will be no small crumb of comfort as he struggled through the whole of 2011 with them, but was fourth-tenths slower than Irishman Laverty, who went round in a 1'42.7, on race rubber.
The Derbyshire man's soft-tyre pace was 1'42.5 which is over a second slower than Jonathan Rea's pole from the October race but track temperatures then were far hotter.
Team-mate Marco Melandri suspiciously set the same race-rubber lap as Haslam but was two-tenths slower on the qualifiers while Chaz Davies improved to a 1'43.2 on race tyres from yesterday's 1'43.8 - the time set by Crescent Suzuki's Leon Camier today after he finally sorted his brake problem. Test rider Alastair Seeley put in a 1'44.1 and went six-tenths faster on qualifiers.
