For just the third time in the NG Road Racing Club’s 42-year history, with over 300 successful race meetings under the belt this meeting had to abandoned without a wheel being turned for this their second event of 2012 at Mallory Park.
The first cancellation was back in the 1970s, a Gaydon meeting was called off when most of the organisers could not get to the meeting because of heavy snow, but even with snow on the ground some of the riders that managed to make it to the Warwickshire venue suggested that if the drove their (mainly Transit and Commer) vans around for long enough they might get a clear line for racing !!
Then in the 1980’s a Colerne meeting was called off due to the whole country being on alert due to IRA bomb threats. With Colerne then being an active base for UK forces the meeting, that was then co-promoted with the RAF Motor Sports Association was called off.
This 2012 meeting though at Mallory Park saw the circuit (..... and much of the Country) ravaged by heavy rain and gale force winds. Despite the best efforts by the organisers and the circuit staff a decision to abandon was taken at mid-day. About 80% of the amassed paddock had stayed put during the mornings storms waiting for a decision, in the hope that the weather might abate.....it didn’t.
When track-side Recticel barriers were being moved by the wind and the huge wheeled paddock litter bins took off quicker than people could run after them the decision was inevitable.
