Cal Cooper bags Aprilia RRV450 title

Manxman Cal Cooper claimed the season-long battle for the ThundersportGB Aprilia RRV 450GP championship with an outstanding display of riding at the penultimate meeting at Cadwell Park on Saturday.

The 16-year-old, riding the JDF Racing-prepared Italian twin, won three of the five races that formed rounds 13, 14 and 15 of the title series, the final outing on Saturday being a double-pointer race held over from the previous meeting. In the course of weekend Cooper also scorched to the fastest ever Supertwins/Minitwins/ lap of the 2.11-mile Lincolnshire circuit.

"I was determined to win before the final four races at Mallory Park next month and everything clicked from the drop of the flag although I had a scary moment on the penultimate lap of the 50-pointer when I hit a squirrel and I had a foot-down moment," said Cooper.

Cooper took the opening title race with ease, winning by nearly six seconds and also set the fastest lap, and had a similar winning margin when he rode the following Supertwins/Minitwins race, where he again set the fastest lap. He had five seconds to spare in the second championship race and broke the lap record before his time was eclipsed by the second finisher.

The final outing of a hectic day for Cooper was the double-pointer race that was included in the programme to make up for the abandoned meeting at Angelsey and he took the lead from the off and was never headed.

Having initially decided not to contest the Supertwins/Minitwins championship back in March at Brands Hatch, Cooper eventually took advantage of the extra racing the series provided and despite missing several early races and suffering two DNFs, he now leads the Open 650 contest by one point.

He also has a 50 point lead in the 450 Supertwins class.

He produced a staggering 1.36.359 lap in the first Supertwins/Minitwins race on Sunday, an absolute Open record, and which knocked two seconds off the 450 previous best time.
