BMW World Superbike rider Marco Melandri has been handed down a suspended 19-month jail term for evading millions in income tax in Italy.

The former MotoGP man had been claiming his first residence was in London when he was racing the premier class but investigators found his paper trail really led back to his home town of Ravenna.

Melandri has already reached an agreement with the Italian revenue office over payment.
