Yakhnich Motorsport rider Sam Lowes promises to battle through the pain of two broken fingers, and will come out fighting when he takes to the World Supersport grid at the Motorland Aragon circuit this weekend.
The cheeky twin sustained his injuries during testing last week, and even though he was able to complete the testing session, the rider is still experiencing some pain. The Yamaha racer will be hoping to receive support at the track to get him through the three days of competitive practice and qualifying sessions, and not to mention the main event on Sunday.
“The Clinica will give me some different strapping, but with fingers you can not do a lot, all you have to do is keep them straight, and I have got a bigger glove to put on to get over it. With the wrist because it is not broken, it is just torn ligaments I am hoping it will be better for this week," said Lowes, speaking to bikesportnews.com.
"But it is probably a bit stupid of me to think it but they are telling me if I rest it, and if I take some more painkillers it should be a lot better. Hopefully they have got ways to tape it up to make it stronger for the bike, and for a last lap battle I want it to be as good as it can be. So fingers crossed I can stop crashing and it will be better, but I am not too bad.
“The crash was tiny, I slid and lost the front, but it was nothing bad. I hit the gravel and I flipped over so I dived into the gravel and my arms were out in front of me and I bent my wrist back quite badly and I broke two of my fingers, but it is not too bad. But that was on the first day of the test. On the second day I didn’t know if I could ride and it was really painful, but I did quite well.”
Lowes is well aware of just how competitive this years World Supersport Championship is going to be, and will be focusing on reigning champion, Mahi Racing Team India’s Kenan Sofuoglu. The Turkish rider just pipped Lowes to first place at Phillip Island back in February, and Lowes does not want that to happen again this weekend.
“I have had some painkillers and lots of ice, and we made some good changes with the bike and I feel really good. But the race pace is something we need to work on as Kenan is going to be strong in every race, and in Australia he was strong throughout and I need to work on that. I am in a good position and fingers crossed I can do a good job. It is quite important for me to get a good result, and I am looking forward to it really.
“The team are fantastic and are so supportive and I couldn’t be happier and they give me everything I need. A lot of the guys have got my back in this team, but I am really happy with where I am and with the bike. I am in a really good place, and really excited for the next few races.”
