Monza WSBK: Lowes hails ‘good battle’ for Supersport victory

Yakhnich Motorsport’s Sam Lowes did not have any easy World Supersport race victory at Monza today, and the rider admitted that he had to battle his way to the top spot of the podium, after an epic ten-lap fight out on the Italian circuit.

In taking the victory Lowes fended off charges from three other riders for the win, while title rival MAHI Racing Team India's Kenan Sofuoglu crashed out. The result now catapults the Lincolnshire rider to the top of the championship standings after he successfully blasted his way through the rest of the pack.

Even though Sofuoglu lobbed it, Lowes still had stiff competition from Kawasaki Intermoto Ponyexpres rider Florian Marino, Puccetti Racing’s Riccardo Russo and Pata Honda’s Lorenzo Zanetti. But the Englishman overtook all three riders on the final lap with an impressive move at Ascari.

“Today was a bit different to a normal race day. In the previous starts I was lucky to not get in too much trouble but that race was quite difficult for me and it was a very good battle. But thank you very much to my team who have given me a fantastic bike all season and thank you to everybody. Well done to Lorenzo and Florian, and I will see everybody at my home race at Donington, and hopefully I can do the same again,” said Lowes.
