Portimao WSBK: Gamble fails to pay off for Camier

Fixi Crescent Suzuki’s Leon Camier is feeling frustrated after a gamble during Superpole failed to work, eliminating the rider in the first session. The rider will now start the World Superbike races tomorrow in Portimao from the fifth row.

During Superpole one, Camier did not have the chance to even use his qualifying tyres. He was in sixth after setting 1’43.139 lap on a race tyre, but the qualifiers worked so well around the track for the other riders that they ended up producing better times, resulting in Camier finishing the session in 13th, just in front of injured Pata Honda rider Leon Haslam.

There was nothing more that Camier could do, and had to watch from his garage as other riders clocked faster lap times. But the Kent man is pleased with his pace, and the improvements made to his bike and is looking forward to getting a good start tomorrow.

“I thought we did enough to get through, but I never thought another seven people who would make that much time as there were people who were nearly a second off, and then they made over a second difference on the Q. At Donington the Q made not a great deal, and I went just as quick on a race tyre, I think," said Camier, speaking to bikesportnews.com from the circuit.

"I only did one lap on a race tyre and got held up and still did a decent lap and I thought it would be close, and I thought it would be alright but Badovini made a massive difference on the Q, because he got a good lap.

“We tried some new chassis settings this weekend, and we started off the weekend outside the top ten then we made some changes in Superpole and I felt good, the bike felt good. I just got to hope I make some time up in the race.”
