Silverstone WSBK: Sofuoglu snatches provisional pole from Lowes

Yakhnich Yamaha’s Sam Lowes was out paced once again by MAHI Racing’s Kenan Sofuoglu in the World Supersport first qualifying practice session at Silverstone. In a repeat of the morning’s session Lowes initially topped the timesheets, but with 37 minutes to go the Turkish rider once again pipped him to the post.

No matter how hard the Derby rider tried he could not better the time clocked by the reigning champ of 2’08.823, and even after a last lap dash in the final seconds it was not enough to set a provisional pole position, as Lowes was unable to lap in the 2’08’s and had to settle for his best lap of 2’09.001.

Lowes was the only rider to crash in the qualifying practice session, but he was unhurt and was able to rejoin after falling at Chapel Curve.

Puccetti Racing’s Riccardo Russo had a solid session on track and pushed his way up to third with an impressive time of 2’09.308 followed by PTR Honda’s Sheridan Morais who was fourth quickest.

A battle emerged between Kawasaki Intermoto team-mates Florian Marino and David Salom, as to who would make it into the top five quickest times, but it was Frenchman Marino who had that honour after clocking a time that was one tenths of a second faster than his Spanish team-mate.

Rivamoto’s Jack Kennedy, with six minutes remaining of the session made a massive jump from thirteenth to fourth with a 2’10.209 lap, but in the final seconds he was pushed back to seventh, followed by Team Lorini’s Raffaele De Rosa.

ParkinGO MV rider Christian Iddon just missed out on the top ten, after setting a 2’10.382 lap, and bagging himself a provisional fourth row start, with fellow Brit, DMC-Lorenzini rider Kev Coghlan two tenths of a second behind, with the thirteenth quickest time. Wild card rider, Smith Triumph’s Glen Richards ended the session with a 2’10.814 time, placing him sixteenth fastest.

The session was red flagged after ten minutes when Rivamoto’s Eduard Blokhin had an engine blow out, which resulted in oil spilling on the track.
