BMW Italia’s Leon Camier did the World Superbike Evo double at Imola today even after running off track to avoid a crash with Bimota’s Ayrton Badovini.
The Andorra resident lost around ten seconds in the gravel at Rivazza and had to get his head down and charge back to the rear of the unhomologated BB5. He got to within feet at the final chicane but as Badovini is not allowed to score points, Camier settled for taking the win.
“I couldn’t be much more happy. In the first race, I didn’t have a good feeling, it was windy, it changed things a lot. For the second race, we made a small change to the front and the bike felt a lot better,” said Camier, speaking to bikesportnews.com at Imola.
“In the second, it was a bit messy, a lot of people were making mistakes and I got caught up in them which gave Canepa a bit of a gap but I managed to catch them up before Badovini made a big mistake and I had to run off to avoid hitting him, losing I don’t know how much time.
“So, I just got my head down and caught Badovini again but he was just that little bit too far ahead to try and pass into the chicane. I braked hard and late, and had it been for the main win or championship, then I would have tried it, no question, and taken the consequences but we won the race anyway. Thanks to BMW Italia for giving me the chance to race here and take these wins."
