DMC Panavto-Yamaha’s Kev Coghlan will start the World Supersport race at Donington Park on the front row after setting the third fastest time in a very wet qualifying session, after putting down a 1’47.932.
The Scot could not manage to out perform Pata Honda’s Michael Van Der Mark or Mahi Racing’s Kenan Sofuoglu who were the only riders to lap inside the 1’46 bracket, with the Dutchman going seven tenths quicker than the triple champ to take pole position.
But Coghlan was close to not making it onto the front row, as former MCE British Superbike contender, PJ Jacobsen was taking up the third spot with a 1’48.158, but the Perthshire rider went two tenths of a second faster, pushing the American on to row two.
Motorpoint British Supersport rider Sam Hornsey ended up rounding off the top ten. The wild-card racer stayed on his bike and set a 1’49.909 as the chequered flag appeared on a damp track.
Conditions were not valuable at the start of the session as the heavens opened and rain fell heavily on to the track, making it very difficult for the riders. Coghlan initially set the pace, only for Sofuoglu to top the timing-screens with a 1’47.501.
CIA Insurance Honda’s Jack Kennedy did not have the best of starts after falling on only his first lap, but his team did have a the whole session to mend his bike, and he was able to complete a handful of laps to end the day eighteenth, with Com Plus Racing’s Fraser Rogers finishing just inside the top twenty, after crashing at McLeans.
