Donington WSBK: ‘The front row is a big step’ – Haslam

Pata Honda’s Leon Haslam gave the home fans something to cheer about as he set the second quickest time during a wet Superpole at his local track of Donington Park, and will start both races tomorrow from the front row.

It’s the Smalley rider’s first front row start since Moscow in 2012, and the Brit is still suffering from an arm injury from a crash in a previous round, but battled through the pain to clock a 1’45.009.

Haslam admits that it’s a ‘big step’ to get back on the front row, and feels confident on the bike, especially in wet conditions, but knows improvements need to be made to his Honda in the dry. But the local lad is confident he can win, if conditions remain the same tomorrow.

“Just to be on the front row is a big step and obviously being at my home round is a great feeling, in the wet weather I am feeling pretty confident, like I was in Assen, and starting from the front row means I can try and get a good start rain or shine,” said Haslam, speaking to bikesportnews.com at the circuit.

“We still have some improvements to make in the dry, but the wet weather is about feeling right and the bike is not such a big factor as we can ride through the problems. It is definitely slippery out there and I was one of the only ones who managed to stay on the bike. In the wet it is always a lottery but I know I can be competitive - that I can win, especially in the rain.”
