Voltcom Suzuki’s Alex Lowes had an eventful home World Superbike round at Donington Park. He made it onto the podium in race one with a third place finish, but a crash in the final outing of the day meant he salvaged ninth on the timesheets.
Last year Lowes did the double in the MCE British Superbike championship, but he could not quite manage that today, even though he was at the sharp end for both races, battling with the leading bikes of Kawasaki’s Tom Sykes and Loris Baz.
But a mistake going into the Melbourne Loop meant he collided with the back wheel of Aprilia’s Marco Melandri’s bike and even though he came off, he pushed his way up the field to finish inside the top ten.
“It was a mixed weekend but I managed to get some points. We made some changes in between races and I made a good start in race two and I didn't want to hang about,” said Lowes, at the track.
“But I crashed and the bike was a bit damaged but I managed to get back on the bike to take ninth - but things were going well, but I came in fast at Melbourne loop and crashed. But things are going in the right direction for me and the Voltcom team are ready for the next round, and I am really happy with the podium from race one."
