Kawasaki’s Tom Sykes proved to be unstoppable once again at the Donington Park round of the World Superbike championship. Huddersfield’s finest took the spoils in both races, and is the only rider in history to do the double at the track two years on the bounce.
But even though the final race of the day was tough for Sykes, he still hails the first session as his best victory of his career, as he had to fight hard with his team-mate Loris Baz. Now he hopes he has proved his critics and doubters wrong.
“Race two was a bit more relaxed - but race one I had to work really hard. The first victory of the day was definitely the best win of my World Superbike career,” said Sykes speaking to bikesportnews.com from the track.
“I had to battle really hard and push to the limit and it paid off, and it was worth it. From a satisfaction and spectators point of view it was great.
“That’s the beauty of racing, you can prove your critics and doubters wrong and I felt I did that today. Almost 90 percent of my wins have been flag to flag and today I have had to work hard for it, and maybe people will change their opinion of me. But I wont care too much as I will enjoy the moment and will be heading to Sepang in a confident mood. But I am just so happy with another double victory at Donington Park, with the home fans here too.”
Sykes is now off to Malaysia for the next round of the championship. The rider hasn’t been to the track for four years, but is confident his bike can be competitive once again.
“I really enjoyed my visit to Malaysia in December. I tested on the Sepang track, back in 2010. But I know this bike can be competitive at any race circuit.”
