Donington WSBK: ‘It’s great to be back on the podium’ – Coghlan

DMC Panavto-Yamaha’s Kev Coghlan made it back on the World Supersport podium at his home round of Donington Park yesterday, and now the Scot feels his championship campaign is back on track.

The Perthshire rider did lead the race yesterday, in dry conditions, but a lack of grip meant he lost out to Pata Honda’s Michael Van Der Mark and Yakhnich’s Jules Cluzel. But he did manage to hold off the charge from Mahi Racing’s Kenan Sofuoglu to clinch the third step on the rostrum.

“It is great to be back on the podium, just a bit disappointed not to be in the fight at the end. It wasn’t easy in those last few laps to keep Sofuoglu off my back,” said Coghlan, speaking to bikesportnews.com at the track.

“But it was a lack of grip in the end which prevented me from catching up with the leading bikes of Van Der Mark and Cluzel. It is great to be on the podium in front of the home fans, and their support has been mega even in the horrible weather.

“I was doing all I could to hang on with the front guys and I did that. Even after the Imola round I was watching the race back and I knew I could have won there. Here we needed some steady points on the board so it was a minimum risk race – but now I can get back to challenging for the championship.”
