Ducati’s Cal Crutchlow has revealed the new spec of Ducati being used by team-mate Andrea Dovizioso is worth four-tenths of a second per lap on top speed alone at Motorland Aragon and has resigned himself to the fact he will get no upgrades for the rest of the season.
The Coventry man is off to LCR Honda for 2015 so is stuck with the same bike he rode at Qatar while Dovizioso and Pramac Ducati’s Andrea Iannone are benefiting from engine, chassis and swingarm upgrades which saw them both top the free practice timesheets today.
“I went a lot faster than I did in the race last year but that shows the level of competition, I was nearly on the podium last year. Tomorrow I expect to go better now we know where we need to improve. I lose a lot on the brakes into turn one and over four-tenths to Andrea just on the speed of the bike. Hopefully tomorrow I can benefit from a fresher engine. We need to reduce this as it is too much just on straight-line speed,” said Crutchlow, speaking at Aragon.
“I have no new parts and I will receive no new parts for the rest of the season. I receive no new parts all season, I am on essentially the same bike as I rode at Qatar. I believe we are not at the limit of the package as if you put Andrea on the bike he may go a little quicker but not a second quicker.
“I’m not riding the best but I believe it is a lot to do with the combination of the package, morale, a lot of things amounted into one. I’m not too happy, that is sure, because you turn up at a race weekend, you give your all for a bad result. When you can’t have the lastest-spec parts, or even the middle-spec parts, it becomes difficult.
“That doesn’t stop me giving 100 per cent, I’m saying my morale isn’t the best and it is the same for the team on my side of the garage. They want a good result and it only takes one good session and your morale can change in an instant, which is worth a tenth. The rest is in the engine and all the other bits.”
