Donington WSBK: No title thoughts yet for Rea

Runaway World Superbike series leader Jonathan Rea insists he isn’t thinking of the championship title just yet despite going into this weekend’s Donington Park round with a whopping 87-point lead.

The Castletown resident has won eight out of the ten races so far on his factory Kawasaki ZX-10R and hasn’t yet been off the podium. On this form, he could wrap up his first world championship by the Sepang round but he says it’s all to early for that sort of talk.

“It’s been really good so far. The bike is always in the ballpark and we haven’t had any real problems with it so that lets me concentrate on fine tuning over the weekend, sorting out race plans and getting into a rhythm instead of having to sort out issues,” said Rea, speaking to bikesportnews.com.

“I don’t want to start talking about championships just yet. The gap is great but the real fast guys like Davies, Haslam and Sykes have all had their bad times and I suppose I am waiting for mine. Hopefully they won’t turn up.

“We made some changes to the bike for Imola, basically making it longer to get some more stability on the brakes so it didn’t pick up the rear and that worked. That should be good for the last sector at Donington, where I have struggled in previous years because my style is hit the brakes hard initially and let off on the way in.

“I like the track and my brother has organised a bus full of people to come from Ireland, there are people coming over from the Isle of Man, lots of support so it should be a good weekend.”
