Dunlop maintains unbeaten streak at Armoy Race of Legends

Michael Dunlop maintained his unbeaten run at Armoy, winning a seventh consecutive Race Of Legends today, taking victory in the feature race and completing a hat-trick throughout the day.

After the disappointment of blowing an engine in Friday night’s Supersport race and Derek McGee being declared winner after two and a half laps, Dunlop started the day in earnest with a win in the second 600 race of the meeting, taking the flag 3.3 seconds ahead of McGee.

This was quickly followed by a win in the Open race, although he didn’t have it all his own way as by the end of the opening lap McGee was in front and gapping the Bennetts Suzuki of Dunlop by 2.3 seconds at the end of lap two. Dunlop soon closed the deficit and by lap four was breathing down McGee’s neck, eventually making his move to the front and taking the win by 4.6 seconds from the Mulingar man.

Newcomer Davy Todd snatched the final podium spot from William Dunlop on corrected time having started in the second wave and Paul Jordan completing the top five.

The feature Race of Legends Dunlop was in a class of his own leading off the line he powered into an early lead increasing it lap on lap two and eventually winning by an impressive 12.6 seconds from his brother William. Michael Sweeney passed McGee in the closing stages of the race to take third, James Cowton finished fourth and another good result for a newcomer Joey Thompson on Ian Lougher’s Kawasaki completed the top six.

McGee won the Supertwins race by a mere 0.88 seconds from Cowton with Adam McLean third. Having won the past two supertwins races, Joe Loughlin was starting as hot favourite but crashed out at Dunlop’s Leap on the warm up lap. Although he was unhurt but the bike was severely damaged, he did go on to add a win to his earlier junior support victory, comfortably winning the senior support race later in the day.

Christian Elkin won the 125 race by an impressive 15.32 seconds in front of Adam McLean with Paul Robinson a further 5.74 seconds back in third.
