MotoGP Austria #2: Mir upset at lack of Espargaro penalty

Ecstar Suzuki's Joan Mir has expressed anger and frustration at MotoGP's race direction after they failed to penalise Pol Espargaro for running off track on the final lap of yesterday's blue riband race.

Espargaro, Jack Miller and eventual winner Miguel Oliveira were all tussling for the win into the last corner and the works KTM man ran wide. Earlier in the day, Jorge Martin was docked the win for doing the same thing in Moto2, handling Marco Bezzecchi victory.

In Mir's eyes, the offence is the same so should be the penalty.

"I'm really, really angry about the decision at the moment, because it's not fair," Mir said at the track.

"Martin didn't win the race because he go onto the green and he didn't gain anything.

"And I agree that you don't penalise somebody that is in front and another rider touches him and kicks him off track. In that point, I agree about the decision for safety.

But in this case, it's not like this. If you check the last two corners, Pol took the inside in the last two corners, then he goes wide, Jack took the position and then Pol decide to continue on the outside.

"Of course he went wide, because if you go into that corner with that speed, of course you go wide.  And then we can see, when he touched the green, he just opens  the throttle full. What happens if that was gravel, because he's out of the track? It's green [paint] for our safety, but he was out of the track a lot.

"For me, it makes no sense you don't penalise this. Pol did what he had to do, I don't say nothing about him. He did a great job and an awesome race, but I'm really surprised about race direction and really angry."

Had the penalty been applied, it would have given Mir his second MotoGP podium – a feat in itself as he went out for the second race with a medium tyre that had on it 18 laps as the soft and hard versions do not work well on the GSX-RR.
