Simon Andrews will make a return to the MCE British Superbike Championship in 2014 with his RAF Reserves Honda team in addition to riding a works-backed BMW on the roads.
The Evesham man has been a podium contender in his previous MCE BSB campaigns, scoring his first podium finish at Cadwell Park in 2009 and last lined up on the grid in 2011 before moving into the official Honda World Endurance team.
Andrews has recently been fighting back from injury, but is now feeling in a strong position to target his best season to date in the Championship and moves from Superstock back to his preferred Superbike.
“I like working with the RAF, there are some possibilities to do other things with the RAF, it's not just the bikes, and it is everything else that the RAF have planned that interests me now. I just want to get enjoyment in my racing, I get enjoyment from the roads but sometimes you can lose that. With (team boss) Lee, we have good fun, good banter, we are good friends - he feeds off me and I teach him some things,” said Andrews, speaking to bikesportnews.com.
“He is very well organised and really on the ball and that's what I like about Lee, I like having someone that already has the same kind of ideas and suggestions as me. Because the guys are still fresh to it, they love it and are all energetic; it just makes turning up to the garage and racing good. I want to do well for them and want us to do well as a team. I enjoy the time I have with them so that's worth a lot in itself; having a good group of guys and enjoying the package.
“I am built for a Superbike and basically I can't ride a Superstock for shit! They don't handle great and the things I want to change, I can't and you become despondant - you are stuck with the same thing. Honda had a good chassis and we had good glimpses and we were fast at the start of the year but I had to learn and adjust to the Superstock bike. As soon as I got back on the TT Legends bike, I was running in the top three of World Endurance on that thing, I can ride a 200bhp Superbike; I just can't ride a 170bhp Superstocker.”
The team will also field the new Honda SP Fireblade in the Superstock 1000 class with Manxman Conor Cummins as the team also hunt success in this championship in addition to the North West 200 and the Isle of Man TT road races.
