Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki’s Shane Byrne experienced extreme highs and lows during today’s MCE British Superbike double-header at Assen. He ended up in the gravel in race one, but snatched the victory from Buildbase BMW’s Ryuichi Kiyonari in the final outing of the day.
It looked like it would end in disaster for Byrne after his race one mistake in wet conditions, but he pulled it back to make a move that stuck on the very last lap at the final chicane to take home a maximum 25 points for his team in race-two – extending his lead in the Showdown to 12 points.
Byrne hasn’t won a race since Knockhill, back in June so finding himself back on the top step of the podium has left the title fighter feeling ‘delighted’ in what has been a very mixed day for the Lambeth born rider.
“I didn’t really know when to make my move on Kiyo, but I saw his bike in front of me and it was moving around a lot and I thought he would slow down a bit, but every time I thought that he upped the pace once again,” said Byrne at the track.
“But my pace in the last chicane was really good, so I knew I could make a move and go into the lead at that spot, but I left it till the last lap to make my move as I knew that if I did it before then Kiyo would have tried to fight back. So that move definitely paid off, and I am delighted to be back on the podium, and at the top too.”
