Tyco Suzuki’s PJ Jacobsen took an astonishing Motorpoint British Supersport victory in a dramatic race at the TT Circuit Assen, which saw Championship leader Jack Kennedy crash out of the lead.
Kennedy got a terrible start from pole position and consequently had to fight his way through to take the lead from local favourite Raymond Schouten on lap two. The Dubliners championship rival Glen Richards then moved past Schouten and the duo looked to pull away. Richards piled the pressure on Kennedy until it eventually payed dividends. Kennedy tucked the front at the fast right-hander of Stekkenwal, seemingly handing the advantage in the championship over to Richards.
Seton Yamaha new boy Schouten had different opinions, however, as he chased down and then passed the Aussie, causing the thousands of Dutch spectators at Assen to put up a roar. Christian Iddon and Jacobsen quickly joined the boys at the front and it didn’t take long for them to make their move.
Iddon first squeezed past Jacobsen and then moved in to second, past Richards. Jacobsen was having none of it though, as the little New Yorker dived under the inside of both Richards and Iddon. He then took the lead, backing in his Tyco Suzuki into the Geert Timmer chicane and past the Dutchman.
As they went on to the last lap Jacobsen looked comfortable but ran wide at the Strubben hairpin and suddenly Iddon was in with a shout of claiming a momentous double victory. He edged ahead of the American too as they went in to the last corner of the Geert Timmer chicane. Jacobsen was on the grass but kept the throttle down, he came back on to the track pushing Iddon off, but the Suzuki took it on the drag to the flag by just 0.110 of a second.
Richards claimed third but couldn’t take full advantage of Kennedy’s crash, as the Dubliner still leads the championship by 4.5 points. Schouten took fourth ahead of Richard Cooper and Glenn Irwin, who was crowned the Cup Champion with his double cup win here at Assen.
Gearlink Kawasaki’s Ben Wilson was seventh ahead of Luke Jones and Luke Mossey. Smiths of Gloucester Triumph’s Billy McConnell rounded out the top ten.
