Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki’s Shane Byrne is not giving up on his dream of being crowned MCE British Superbike champion for a record breaking fourth time, and vows that he is ‘still well in contention’ for the title.
The Lambeth born rider finished the opening BSB race of the day in third, behind rival's Samsung Honda’s Alex Lowes and Tyco Suzuki’s Josh Brookes. Byrne did hold on to second for the majority of the race, until he was overtaken by Lowes on lap fourteen at Surtees. Now he has dropped back down to second in the overall championship standings and is three points behind Lowes.
Byrne did not enjoy riding out in the difficult weather conditions and was concentrating on keeping the bike up right and not crashing out. He is hoping for some dry track time tomorrow so he is able to give fans ‘a proper show’ at his home circuit of Brands Hatch.
“I got a good start and I stuck behind Josh as I knew he would be really fast. But all credit to Josh, he rode a great race. Alex upped the pace a tiny bit and I took third. It was probably one of the most boring races I have ever had, as I did 18 laps, just trying to stay up right. But that is one race out of the way and we are still well in contention. The conditions on track were awful so tomorrow I hope it will be dry and we can give everyone a proper show,” said Byrne at the circuit.
