Brands BSB: Dominant Byrne doubles up

Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki’s Shane Byrne rode a perfect race to take maximum points in the final MCE British Superbike race of the day at the Brands Hatch Indy circuit.

He managed to do the double at his home track, pulling ahead of the rest of the grid, only to be challenged by Milwaukee Yamaha’s Josh Brookes during the final laps. It was a brave performance by the Australian as he battled his way from tenth on the starting grid, and in the end got past GBmoto’s James Ellison to take second, with the Kawasaki rider holding on to third.

Byrne got the better of pole-setter Ellison to take the lead going into Paddock Hill Bend on the first lap, followed by his team-mate Stuart Easton and GBmoto's Chris Walker.  By the eighth lap Byrne’s lead was under a second as the battling trio of Easton, Walker and Ellison started to make their move on the race one winner. On lap 12 at Paddock Hill Ellison overtook his fellow GBmoto team-mate to go third.

Brookes made a solid start from the fourth row and had the former triple champion of Buildbase BMW Ryuichi Kiyonari in his sights and on lap 15 made a move to go fifth pushing the Japanese rider into sixth. But the Aussie rider was on a roll and no sooner did he get the better of Kiyo he challenged Walker for fourth and it worked. Kiyo was not going to be left out and pushed past Walker to go fifth on lap 18.

At the front the fastest man on track – Ellison out-paced Easton to go second after twenty laps and the Kendal rider managed to pull away. But the formidable Brookes only had a podium place in his sights and was soon on the back of Easton and made a move coming out of the first corner to go third on the 21st lap.

Ellison continued to pile on the pressure to Byrne and with seven laps remaining closed the gap on the leader by 0.1 seconds. Brookes was not holding back and at Paddock Hill passed Ellison to go second and began to close down Byrne.

On the penultimate lap back-marker Morrello Racing Peter Baker was caught up in the race between Byrne and Brookes and got in-between the Milwaukee rider pulling him back – ending his chances of getting closer to Byrne to battle for the top step on the podium, leaving the Kawasaki rider to take the win for the second time today, with Ellison clinching the final spot on the rostrum. Kiyo and Walker rounded off the top five, followed by Easton.

Buildbase BMW's James Westmoreland and Quattro Plant Kawasaki's Dan Linfoot were all fighting for the seventh spot, with the BMW getting the better of the Kawasaki to go ahead, with Milwaukee Yamaha's Tommy Bridewell and Gearlink Kawasaki's Ben Wlison rounding off the top ten.

FFX Yamaha’s Ian Hutchinson had a technical problem and entered the pits after three laps, followed quickly by Buildbase BMW’s Michael Dunlop who is nursing an arm injury.

While is sixth place and with 21 laps to go Millsport Ducati’s Jakub Smrz crashed unhurt at Druids bringing a premature end to his race weekend. Anvil Hire Tag Racing's Mitchell Carr tumbled off the track in exactly the same spot as the Czech Republic rider with five laps remaining.
