CN Racing's Glenn Irwin confirmed his second place in the Metzeler National Superstock 600 championship with his third win and sixth podium of the season at Brands Hatch this afternoon.
Pole position rider Irwin got away first into the corner as the train of bikes behind settled into a their positions. It was Ben Burke of Seton Yamaha's in second followed by Alex Olsen of Team HARIBO who got ahead of his teammate Johnny Blackshaw who started second from the road.
As lap two started five bikes crashed out at Paddock Hill all of which looked to be independent of one another. The riders out of the top five involved were teammates Johnny Blackshaw and Olsen along with Grant Whittaker of HWW Tyrewarmers/Ferris Racing who was running strong in fifth after starting from 13th on the grid.
After a couple of laps with the safety car it was decided that the race would be red flagged to allow the ambulance to attend one of the riders involved. This also gave more time to inspect and try to improve the condition of the track which was still suffering from damp patches due to heavy overnight rain.
As the race re-started for a six lap dash Irwin still got the lead followed by Burke, Aye Gee Suzuki's Andy Reid, East and Behan, who was Irwin's main rival for the second place overall. Irwin seemed to run away slightly to have a lead of 1.6s as they started lap three. Brown and East worked their way up a couple of places to be running third and fourth while closing in on Burke.
After constant pressure Brown had got ahead of Burke for second to immediately pull away to chase down the leader Irwin. Brown and Burke exchanged places a couple of times, it was Burke who at Druids on the final lap reclaimed second. Just as it was expected Brown would push for second to try get third overall in the championship East made an attempt to snatch third. This meant Brown had to focus on defending his third place, side by side all the way to the chequered flag beating East by five hundredths of a second.
NFB Financial's Bjorn Estment took fifth away from Reid, despite finishing 7th overall Bristol Kawasaki's Connor Behan kept his third place in the 2011 series while Nally Racing's Cody Nally and Niall Campbell of Grant Racing rounded off the top ten.
Picking up the last five point scoring places and scoring their first points of the season were Tom Weeden Racing's Tom Weeden and JW Smart Services James Phare. The next three places were taken by Matthew Paulo of Grant Racing, Andy Lawson of Seton Yamaha and Alex Barkshire of Alex Barkshire Racing who added a few more points to their tally after finishing in the points the past few rounds.
