Brands BSB: ‘Last year gave me a kick up the arse’ - Byrne

Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki’s Shane Byrne is in the most focused form of his life on the eve of this year’s MCE British Superbike opener at Brands Hatch and wants the record fourth title after coming so close in 2013.

The local man lost out on last year’s title in the final race of the season to rival Alex Lowes and is determined it is not going to happen again.

“Last year gave me the biggest kick up the arse ever. It had felt great all of the way through. I was having so much fun, enjoying the races, having some great action with Alex Lowes, but then right at the end I lost the championship,” said Byrne, speaking to Bikesport News.

“Last year I was right up for the title. Believe me, this year I am even more up for it. I have to achieve the goal and that is winning the title. I never lack motivation, always striving for better and that is by ensuring that I am in the best possible shape to go out there and do it.

Even though the opposition is as fierce in 2014 as it was last time out, Byrne insists will concentrate on his own performance and not worry about the chasing pack.

“No offence to them, but it is not something that I think or worry about. I concentrate hard on what I have to do to ensure that come race day I am in the best position that I can be. That is why I do not think about what they are doing. If I am fully focused on my job then on race day we will be there or thereabouts.”
