Brands BSB: Rider round up

MCE British Superbike

Gary Mason, MSS Kawasaki: It has been a good weekend. Everyone is pushing so hard out there at the front and we need to sort out a couple of issues with the tyres and bike to get those last few tenths. At the end of the day we beat the World Superbike guys fair and square and that’s amazing. It would have been good to beat Kiyo and Rutter but I saw Brookes had a DNF which helps our chances for the Show Down. I’m really happy to get another podium, but I want to do better at Cadwell and get in that top six.

Jon Kirkham, Samsung Suzuki: Three top-ten finishes from three rides – I should be happy with that after my recent run of luck. I can't be totally happy though. The first race today was hard work, so to come away with a second row start for the last race was a good outcome. But then I got trapped in the pack on turn one and all the good work was undone. I got some decent lap times in but got stuck behind another rider, the result could have been better.

"I know the Title Fighters really is a long shot for me now. 24 points doesn't sound so much but at this level all the riders know how to get results. I've still got the goal to improve my results, though, and I think top-six finishes are achievable – as long as I get my starts sorted! I'm still looking to improve."

Alex Lowes, MSS Kawasaki: All in all it was a bit of a rubbish weekend but I tried 100% and now I know where I need to improve. I’m not that far off the pace, when I was in seventh in the first Sunday race I was feeling good, but I made a mistake. Despite the results I enjoyed the racing this weekend and we have identified what it is about the bike we need to concentrate on to make it better, so I’m confident for Cadwell.

James Westmoreland, Motorpoint Yamaha: It’s not the finish that we wanted for the weekend, really. We had a good setting yesterday. I did everything I could. I had a good start, up to seventh, but I couldn’t go with the group in front of me, they just ran away from me. I didn’t have the grip in the rear to go forward. I am disappointed but I am a racer! We will work out what went wrong and come back stronger. I look forward to the next race at Cadwell Park.

Scott Smart, Moto Rapido Ducati: Brands Hatch has never been a good track for me even though it is my home circuit. I don’t know why I don’t like it, I never have and have never really gone well here. We picked up some good Evo championship points and now I can look forward to three races at Cadwell Park where I realistically expect to be at least on the podium three times.

Glenn Allerton, Doodson Honda: I came to BSB confident I could get the bike on the Evo podium. It’s been a challenge to come to a new circuit that’s not easy to learn and I was picking it up pretty quick but the accident put us back with time on the track. The team worked really well to get the bike back together as fast as they did as there was a lot more damage than first appeared and a short turn around.”

Sunday’s first race was difficult as we didn’t have the set up. A lot is different to the BMW I have in Australia, there’s a whole bunch of variables that are different with the tyres, suspension package,

and electronics that I had to get used to The second race I was happy with, I got a good start and set a good pace and looked like I was going to be on the Evo podium and the first BMW home, but had the problem with the fuel, all in all I was happy with how it went considering it has been a learning weekend.

Fuchs-Silkolene British Supersport

Jack Kennedy, Appleyard Yamaha: It was great to be back racing again. I’m shattered but feel I made progress over the weekend although I am gutted that I just missed the rostrum in the second race. I can’t wait for Cadwell.

Billy McConnell, Oxford TAG Triumph: I’m obviously very disappointed to have made such a schoolboy error – first flying lap, third corner and first left hander and I just gave it too much throttle, it’s as simple as that. It’s such a shame as we were on the pace and improving all the time, so I just feel like I’ve let the team down. I think I could have gone for the win today but it’ll have to wait until Cadwell now – my hand is pretty sore at the moment but it’s only a broken metacarpal so I’m sure it’ll be fine in three weeks' time.

Paul Young, Oxford TAG Triumph: It hasn’t helped me not having the two practice sessions on the full circuit as I haven’t been here for two years, so we haven’t got a really good set-up for the bike. We improved it for the second race and I think it showed. We’ve made progress and scored good points. I couldn’t have ridden any harder in either race without taking massive risks and maybe I’d have been on the podium had I taken a few more chances – but with a low score in the first race and many of my championship rivals crashing out I decided to make the best of what we had and take the points. There was nothing to gain from a silly lunge on the last lap – I didn’t get the bike working well enough, so I need to make sure I get it right at Cadwell and get back on the podium.

Christian Iddon Oxford TAG Triumph: We struggled a bit early in the weekend mainly because I’ve only been here once before, so I was learning as we went. We were left scratching our heads a bit, and couldn’t find the improvement we were looking for. I felt like I was pushing but the lap times weren’t there which was obviously really frustrating. I was held up in the race but managed to post a better lap time that moved me up the grid. Sunday was a difficult day with all the stoppages but once we finally got underway the bike felt good and I’m really pleased with sixth after such difficulties earlier in the weekend.”

Marty Nutt, Nutttravel Yamaha: I'll take that! After the weekend we've had, I'd have been happy with a point so to finish in the top ten is a major boost to all of us as we've got a distinct lack of grunt off the corners and it's really hurting us at all of the circuits at the moment. I was on the edge of the top 15 throughout practice and qualifying but that was when I was lapping on my own - as soon as I get into a race situation, we're being punished. We tried a few different things for Saturday's race but they didn't help at all whilst I was also suffering from a lack of rear grip. I don't know if the rain shower earlier had caused it but I was struggling in so many areas."

"I changed the gearing drastically for Sunday's race and stretched the rev limit out although that was putting a bit of extra stress on the engine. There were a few crashes out there which obviously helped us but I also managed to overtake a few people too so it was nice to round the weekend off with a good, enjoyable race. I knew it would take us a few rounds to get up to speed what with it being a new bike and all that but we don't seem to be making the headway I'd hoped for and it's frustrating as I'm giving it absolutely everything every time I go out. We are making improvements though and there's a 3-week gap now until the next round so we'll keep our heads down, keep working hard and look for some strong results at Cadwell."

Sunoco British 125GP

Luke Hedger, Banks Racing: I started off really confident as I have raced well round the Indi circuit before and was really excited to race the GP circuit. Friday started really well as I love the Indi circuit and was happy with top 3 in both my sessions. Qualifying was ok but I was hoping to increase from 6th in the morning session but had a bad crash in second qualifying so could do nothing about the results. The race didn’t start as I hope, as the bike struggled off the line due to my crash yesterday. The bike took a bit of a battering like myself and it may have had more damage to it then what we realised so I had to work really hard to get the result I got. Slightly disappointed with moving down a place in the championship but relieved with a 4th place in the race.”

Nathan Westwood, Replicast Racing: Qualified 21st after my crank broke, so didn’t get competitive time in for my second quali, race came finished 11th, So overall a good weekend. Thanks to, Gary Dawson, Darren (from Racing Cylinder Services), Simon Hodgson, Alex Brown, Shar Bradford, mom and dad.

Metzeler National Superstock 1000

Howie Mainwaring, MSS Kawasaki: That win has been a long time coming and it was a fantastic race, a great battle with Cooper. We’ve had mega pace all through qualifying and I was really confident for the race. Cooper had loads of straight line speed but I could make it up on the corners, especially coming out of the slower stuff. When I saw a few raindrops on my visor I thought ‘time to start pushing’ as I didn’t want another Thruxton! I got to the front and stayed there this time! That was my first pole of the year and first win so I’d like to thank the team, they have been fantastic and stuck by me all year.”

Tristan Palmer, GBMoto Honda: I am frustrated with the result really, as I think I had a better pace than what we were running. I could have done with a better start too. It's a shame the race didn't go the full distance, as I'm sure I could have got one more place at least. I am now looking forward to better things at Cadwell Park in a few weeks.

Leon Hunt, AP Kawasaki: The weekend started well for me, going fifth in first qualifying but I had an oil leak in the second session and I barely got any laps in so it dropped me down to 13th. Morning warm-up went well though and I actually went quicker than I had done in qualifying so was feeling confident for the race. However, I got a terrible start and had a clutch issue which was making it very difficult to close in on the group in front of me, which was a real shame as I feel we had the pace to run top six or top eight this weekend. It's the third meeting in a row I've been in the points so it's positive in that aspect but we've also had a few issues with the bike this weekend so it's also been frustrating. I feel like I'm riding well though so if we can resolve these little niggles we'll have a great chance of cracking the top ten."

Alex Cudlin, GBMoto Honda: I made a decent but was muscled out into Paddock Hill bend, dropping me back a few spots. For the next 5 laps I made it past a few people and then into a group of 5 or 6. I was ready to make a move, but then the red flags came out due to rain, which ended my race plans early. I am happy to have finally raced here, afteronly two days at the track. I think at the next round I'll be further up the field. Thanks to GBmoto and the whole crew.

Danny Buchan, MSS Kawasaki: This weekend has been tough. Obviously my broken collarbone hasn’t helped but I’m not using that as an excuse. For some reason we have been struggling really badly with set-up. Qualifying didn’t go well but I started fantastically, making up six places in the first lap, however by lap three I started to suffer from arm pump due to my injury. I tried to ride through it for the first five or six laps but then it got worse and worse and by the end I couldn’t feel my wrist. Today was all about solid points and with the championship so close every point counts. I’ll be back on full form at Cadwell Park.”

John McGuinness, Padgetts Honda: We had a new bike for the meeting as the old one was sold after the last round at Oulton Park and it felt really good throughout practice and qualifying. I was more than happy with the pace I was running and I felt that a top ten position, at least, was on the cards and was looking to get in the top six. The Brands GP circuit is one of my favourites and the weather was pretty good so I felt strong going into the race. However, I didn't make the greatest of starts and then rubbed shoulders with a couple of boys through the first corner which allowed a couple more to get up the inside on the run up to Druids and in this class you have to be 100% on it from the start - just the slightest hesitation off the line and you get punished."

As a result I was only just inside the top 15 at the end of the first lap and gave the front runners too much of a head start. There was something like 3 seconds covering the top ten at one stage and I should have been mixing it with them but, instead, I was in the group a few seconds further back and although I worked my way up to 13th when the red flag came out, it was frustrating as I know I could have been a lot higher this weekend. On the plus side, it's more points on the board and the bike's flying so it bodes well for the last 4 rounds of the Championship. I'll now head off to the Ulster GP where I'll be reunited with my TT-winning Superbike so, as well as rides on the Padgetts machines, I've a busy week ahead and I'll be looking for some strong results there.

Conor Cummins, Black Horse Kawasaki: Whilst I didn't finish in the points today, I thoroughly enjoyed today's race and learnt an awful lot about the bike so it should stand us in good stead for the rest of the season. I got a really good start and made a good jump forward so the plan was to run as consistent a pace as I could. I was right behind John so wanted to follow him but I made a couple of mistakes here and there and struggled for consistency which was why I ended up dropping back a bit. It's been hard to find a good set-up this weekend but the bike was a lot better for the race and if it wasn't for my little mistakes I'm sure we could have been in the points."

It's a new bike and we're learning all the time, continually making strides forward so it would be great if we could get some solid, consistent finishes in the final few rounds. I'm enjoying myself and am getting ever closer to being where I want to be so a big thanks to everyone in the Blackhorse Kawasaki team and my personal sponsors - we're not a million miles away so we can be confident heading to the next round.

Jonathan Howarth, G&S Kawasaki: There was no clutch slip whatsoever and I actually stalled it on the warm up lap. It wasn’t any better at the start of the race although I did manage to get it away without stalling but I got a terrible start and found myself down in 21st place. I did manage to pull back a few places but then the bike started to overheat so I had little choice but to pull in.”

Patrick Medcalf, AP Kawasaki: Coming from the Australian Formula Extreme Championship and a Yamaha machine, riding a Kawasaki here and on a circuit I'd never seen before was a huge learning curve for me but a tremendous experience. The spec of the bike is higher than what I'm used to and there's so much strength in depth but it's been a lot of fun and I'm pleased with the result. I've had to learn so much, right across the board, but my aim was to be in the points so I'm glad I've achieved that. If I could have been a bit smoother in the race, I could have been racing with Leon but, overall, I'm happy and would love to come back for a full season in 2012 so a huge thanks to the team for giving me the opportunity.

Metzeler National Superstock 600

Tom Fisher, G&S Kawasaki: I have been struggling all weekend really. The first free practice was on the little Indy track which was not ideal and then qualified down in 29th place. I can’t put my finger on what was wrong but I did go better once the race began. I was close to a points finish but the times are so close in this class that half a second or so mean you are down in 19th place. We go to Cadwell next and that is the team’s home round. Let’s hope we can hit the ground running and pull off a good result for Graham and Sue.”

Keith Farmer, Farmer Yamaha: When the Safety Car went in I got pushed wide on two consecutive corners and lost loads of places. I had to settle back down and get into a rhythm to start picking a few riders off. I’m happy enough with fourth, its points on the board so that is the main thing. We’re off to Cadwell Park next I’ve only been round there on the Paul Bird Racing ZX10R so I’m sure the 600 Yamaha will go well there.

Andy Reid, Aye Gee Suzuki: I've really enjoyed this weekend I'm just totally gutted that I crashed out. It was a big step up for me from a 125 but I've learnt so much and really gained a lot of experience from the whole weekend. The team and the mechanics put in so much hard work this weekend and I just wanted to repay them with a decent result. I'm really gutted as I was in a decent position and loved riding the bike."

Freddie Russo, AP Kawasaki: Right from the word go we've been on it this weekend and after gaining a good set up at a recent Donington Park test, we started with the same here as it's a similar fast, flowing circuit. It all went to plan from the beginning and I managed to get second in first qualifying. I tried a few different settings for qualifying which didn't work although I only dropped one place and was still on the front row which is what you want. I made a reasonable start and was feeling good in third when the safety car came out and when it pulled in I got past Keith Farmer as soon as I could and although Connor was setting an unbelievable pace at the front, I was able to keep Alex Olsen behind me. I had to contend with a couple of false neutrals when I was in fourth gear but apart from that the race was faultless and to finish second is brilliant. All in all it's been a great weekend so a big thanks to everyone at AP Kawasaki especially Alan, Paul, Tony and big Carl.

Josh Wainwright, Aye Gee Suzuki: Despite all the problems we've had this weekend I'm really pleased to have gained a top ten result as after Friday I didn't think we'd even be out on the grid. The guys worked all through the night last night and I really appreciate everything they have done for me and I hope that we can continue to keep getting good results for the rest of the season and get the bikes fully sorted out. It was a tough race but things really gelled together in the closing stages.
