Brands BSB: Wilson back on top as Seeley crashes out

Gearlink Kawasaki's Ben Wilson regained the championship lead from main rival Alastair Seeley of Relentless Suzuki as he crashed out the first British Supersport race at Brands Hatch this afternoon.

After a disappointing round at Silverstone the Kirton rider took his ninth win of the season. As the race got underway Wilson just made it ahead of Seeley to the front at Paddock Hill for the first time. As usual Wilson and Seeley pulled away to have their usual battle and as they came out of Sheen Curve, Seeley took the lead. Side by side and touching they battled over the start/finish straight as they started the second lap; Wilson almost regained the lead but couldn't quite do it. Within a lap and a half Wilson and Seeley were over 1.5 seconds ahead of the others.

Billy McConnell of Oxford Tag Triumph and his teammate Paul Young regularly exchanged the third position as they led a train of riders including Seton Yamaha's Sam Warren, Jimmy Hill of MAP Triumph, Daniel Cooper of Triumph Smiths Gloucester Racing, Luke Mossey of Smiths Gloucester Racing, Pauli Pekkanen of 777RR Motorsport and Oxford Tag Triumph's Christian Iddon who rounded off the top ten. As lap four began Warren dived from fifth directly between the two Triumphs to take third.

Meanwhile back at the front Seeley started to build a lead before crashing out on lap six on the exit of Graham Hill bend, fortunately unhurt but this left Wilson to take the win; despite results both riders are still fully focused on tomorrow.

The battle for second now included a train of riders all the way down to 11th, wheel to wheel. McConnell got back ahead of Warren on lap six, but it wasn't long till he revenged the position back. With only one lap to go Wilson had built a 5.3s lead ahead of Warren who had only half a second gap to McConnell in third, so he wasn't out of danger yet.

As the race continued there were several position changes but as they crossed the line behind the race winner, it was Warren who got ahead of McConnell, followed by Iddon who progressed up through the grid impressively to grab fourth ahead of Young in fifth. Mossey, Pekkanen, Smiths Gloucester Racing's Matthew Whitman, Hill and his teammate Allann Jon Venter also of MAP Triumph rounded off the top ten.

Taking the cup win was Double 'M' Racing's David Paton in 13th overall followed by Paul Curran of IDAQ.com and Sam Hornsey of Hornsey Steels Racing who both also finished in the main championship points.
