Brands BSB: ‘You have to push to see the potential’ - Brookes

Milwaukee Yamaha’s Josh Brookes walked away from two high-speed crashes in qualifying at the Brands Hatch British Superbike round and will start from the third row in race one tomorrow - which is exactly what he was trying to avoid.

The Australian fell in qualifying one at Westfield and then at the start of the third session at Sheene Curve with a potential front row lap in the first two sectors.

“I tried to go as fast as I could and sometimes it happens. I’m disappointed I’ve ruined the bike and created a lot of work for the team but you have got to push to see what the potential is in qualifying,” said Brookes, speaking to bikesportnews.com at the track.

“Normally I always push but the reason I pushed so hard today and had two crashes was because I needed at least a front row start because I can’t overtake here. It’s going to take some desperate braking to go past anyone as I can’t do it in a straight line.

“The bike on its own can do a competitive lap time but when you’re in traffic, the speed of it through the corners is faster than other bikes but down the straight it isn’t so you need to be on your own to get the best out of it.

“The irony of it all is that in the bid to get pole, I crashed and ended up on the third row which is exactly what I was trying not to do.”
