HM Plant Honda's Cal Crutchlow had a disastrous British Superbike weekend at Cadwell Park with mechanical problems and a crash dropping him from second to fourth in the championship standings.
Crutchlow's weekend started badly on Saturday when his Fireblade lunched two engines at the exact same place in free practices one and two. Honda will not reveal the cause of the problems but we believe it's either the same oil feed problem that Michael Rutter encountered a couple of years ago, or it's an on-going reliability problem (click here) which Honda maintain is electrical.
Either way, Crutchlow's performance in the new qualifying setup, which saw him second on the grid, was effort for nothing as his Blade encountered problems with chatter in the first race and he crashed in the second. There is no comment from Honda on the cause of the chatter.
“In race one I was confident that I could stay with the boys but the bike had so much chatter. In the first corner it was fine, but the bike was chattering everywhere else, it was a real problem," said Crutchlow.
"On the throttle it was fine, but when you came off it, the problem occurred, I couldn’t work it out. In the second race I was comfortable behind Tom and feeling confident but I clipped the kerb and down I went. I got back on and worked hard for 13th, but I'm very disappointed. I just have to dig deep and look forward now to Croft."
