RAF Reserves Honda’s Peter Hickman was not fazed by the wet conditions at his local track, of Cadwell Park, as he dominated the final race of the day to take his maiden win in the MCE British Superbike championship.
The local lad ended the race with a 1.2 second advantage over second place finisher, Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki’s Shane Byrne and Milwaukee Yamaha’s Tommy Bridewell. The race one victor bagged his second podium of the day, coming away with third, and securing his place in the Showdown.
Initially it was Byrne who once again got the hole-shot from Hickman, and Bridewell, who both had a superb start from the second row. But the RAF Reserves rider edged ahead of Byrne to lead his first BSB race ever. It was not a great start for Milwaukee Yamaha’s Josh Brookes as he fell on the warm up lap and even though he managed to regroup to start the race he was later black flagged and had to go back to the garage.
Elsewhere the wet conditions caught out some more riders, Alstare Junior’s Christophe Ponsson fell at the Hairpin, but managed to walk away from the crash. On lap four Hickman nearly had a one second lead over Byrne, with Kiyonari getting the better of Bridewell at Park to go into third.
But as Kiyonari was creeping ever closer to Byrne he high-sided at the Hairpin and was being assessed by the medical staff, leaving Bridewell to take back third position, but the triple champ was able to hobble away from the side of the track.
Further down the field the battle of the veterans emerged on the circuit by lap eight, with Tsingtao’s Gary Mason, and Anvil Hire Tag Racing’s Glen Richards vying for that coveted fifth position.
Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki’s Stuart Easton retired with six laps to go with a technical problem, putting a dent in his Showdown hopes, and Stel Suzuki’s Aaron Zanotti fell at the Gooseneck. By the twelfth rotation in rainy conditions Hickman had a 1.2 second advantage over Byrne.
On the penultimate lap Mason got the better of wet weather specialist, Waters to go into fourth, but Buildbase BMW’s returning rider, James Westmoreland crashed, unhurt at the Gooseneck.
At the flag Hickman took a convincing debut win, followed by Byrne and Bridewell. Mason managed to hold on to fourth – his best result of the year so far, with Tyco Suzuki's Josh Waters completing the top five.
Richards, Walker, Wilson and Rutter rounded up the top ten. Anvil Hire Tag Racing’s substitute rider, Scott Smart finishing just inside the points in fifteenth.
