The final day of the Pro-Test at Cartagena has come to an end after four days of track activity and a total of sixteen sessions completed under the sun in Spain. The main theme for most of the MCE British Superbike teams out here was not to focus on lap times, but to try and develop their respective bikes.
Not all the teams were out on track today, and that included the BeWiser bunch, consisting of Danny Buchan and Chris Walker. The pair used today to analyse the data they gathered over the past three days, but both are happy with the development of the Kawasaki’s.
Buchan posted a 1’33.4 yesterday, but for his crew it was about starting from scratch and slowly building the bike up. They used a Superstock 1000 chassis and added to it over the course of the test. With Walker, it was a chance for the experienced rider to really get to grips with the Kawasaki, and getting used to riding with K-Tech suspension instead of Ohlins. But the real benefit for the veteran was getting back on the bike after a long winter break.
In the Tyco BMW garage both Michael Laverty and Tommy Bridewell were trying out their brand new machines, and they both told bikesportnews.com of the potential of the BMW package. The front end has not been a problem for them, but the rear continues to prove problematic for the pair. They were not focusing on lap imes, but Laverty put down a best time of 1’34.8, but for the team it was about getting as much data as possible to take forward to Donington.
Halsall Suzuki had a few niggling issues which they managed to overcome, in particular with Josh Waters’ GSX-R. Oil was leaking from parts of the bike, and the team were trying hard to rectify the issue. Christian Iddon had a positive test and is enjoying being back on British soil, after spending a few years on the world stage. He was finding his feet on the Suzuki, and the team kept changing the set-up so to see what would work or wouldn’t at the track. The Stockport lad put down a 1’34.4 which impressed his crew after only a few days out on the bike.
The Moto Rapido Ducati team did not go out on the same setting twice, and did not focus on lap times. Jakub Smrz went out in every session. He did experience a small tumble in the gravel in the third outing but both him and his Panigale were unhurt and they continued right to the bitter end.
Quattro Plant Kawasaki’s Luke Mossey only went out in the morning session today. His team only made one change yesterday, and didn’t make any major set-up alterations to his machine today. He told bikesportnews.com that his fastest lap was this morning on an SC1 race tyre, which was a 1’33.0. The BSB rookie found he preferred going around on a race, rather than the qualifying tyre, which he found to be slower around the Spanish track.
Team WD-40 rectified the issues which plagued them over the first two days, and in particular with Jack Kennedy’s Kawasaki. The Dubliner experienced major electronic issues which made the bike cut out after only one lap, but today that appeared to all be behind him, as he managed to put down some fast laps – including a 1’34.2.
BSB debutant, Taylor Mackenzie was still smiling after his first week out on the Superbike. He impressed his crew with a 1’35.0, but for the youngster it was about gaining confidence and working out how to handle a 1000cc machine – something he is not used to doing. But by the end of the four days Mackenzie had figured out how to ride the bike, without constantly pulling wheelies.
JG Speedfit Kawasaki tested out a new chassis and engine spec over the past few days, and rider James Ellison was keen to gain some added horse power, as he felt that was lacking on the bike towards the end of last season. But the new chassis appeared to work well.
His garage buddy James Westmoreland was focusing on the throttle and clutch control, and things were going swimmingly for the quiet Yorkshireman, but he high-sided in the final session of the day. He walked away, and according to team boss, Mark Smith-Halvorsen he’s a bit battered, bruised and a bit groggy.
Now some of the team are off to Guadix tomorrow for some more testing, and for others it is all about planning ahead to the official MCE British Superbike test at Donington in a few weeks time.
