CROFT BSB: MARTIN WILL RETURN IN 2010

Gearlink Kawasaki’s Chris Martin visited Croft this weekend following his severe crash at Brands Hatch in which he has completely shattered his ankle and broke more than one vertebra in his back after crashing at approximately 130mph in the Fuchs-Silkolene British Supersport championship.
The North Newbold rider is supported by crutches and a head/neck brace to aid his recovery over the next couple of months.  The horrific incident saw his bike crash fiercely into the tyre wall causing the nearby marshals to temporarily duck for safety while Martin himself heavily bounced across the gravel before flying over and landing on the other side of the tyrewall.
At first only a broken ankle was suspected, but since then more injuries have been discovered.  It was also three weeks before Martin was given the brace that he needed due to the original hospital he was in delaying the progression of his treatment due to them reviewing costs.  This was enough of a reason for Martin to discharge himself and obtain the treatment he needed sooner rather than later from York hospital.
Martin said: “I have to wear the brace for another ten weeks, I’ve had it on for two already.  I have broken several vertebras starting from my C2 vertebrae at the bottom of my neck and downwards.  However it is thought that some breaks may have been there before the crash.”
“I have completely messed up my ankle I broke my fib and tib as well as split my ankle bone in two, the cast is on for three months.  I will be checked when it is all due to come off and as long as everything is ok I will start going through physio and be able to get back to training.  I will be back next year and the other thing is I do need to get some more sponsorship.”
All at www.bikesportnews.com wish Martin well with his recovery and look forward to him returning to the track.
