Ireland's Keith Farmer has lifted the Metzeler National Superstock 600 Championship two rounds early at Donington Park in Leicestershire after a nail-biting second race which saw him do enough to win the title but also stay out of trouble.
Farmer started from second on the grid and didn’t get off to the best of starts slotting into fifth place as the lights went out. Two turns in and he was up to third place but as he approached Goddards he ran wide and lost a number of places dropping back to seventh.
He worked his way forward to fifth place and stayed there as he settled into the race. Farmer moved up to fourth place on lap seven and briefly held third place but Dean Brown soon took it back. A big moment at Craner Curves saw Farmer out of the seat and relegated to sixth position. With the championship at stake Farmer settled for sixth place, however on lap eleven his main rival Connor Behan crashed out gifting the title to Farmer.
Farmer won by 58 points over Behan.
A jubilant Farmer said: “That was the longest race of my life. We made some changes to the bike and it just made things worse. I didn’t get a great start and I had a few moments. I just tried to settle in and let the race come to me. I saw that Connor had gone down which was unfortunate. I have to say thanks to everyone who has helped us out this season and a huge thanks to Paul Bird Motorsport for his support and the opportunities he has given me this season.”
