Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki’s Shane Byrne failed to make it onto the top step of the podium during today’s MCE British Superbike double-header at Donington Park. He is fed of finishing second, and admitted that he would have rather crashed today.
The rider also blasted the BSB Showdown format, as his near enough 100 point advantage has been slashed to 26, but he accepts that those are the rules and is keen to get back onto the podium at the next round at Assen.
“To be honest I got a decent enough start and nearly got under Kiyo but I couldn’t quite make it and I sat up and Stuart went past, and I thought it couldn’t stay like this as he would get away,” said Byrne, at the circuit.
“He was setting an incredible pace and he dropped back into the 1’29’s and I just hung in there and formulated a cunning plan which back fired on me and I wanted to get into the Hairpin to get momentum, but I nearly sent myself to the moon. But I hung on, but I didn’t get close enough to pass. I would rather crash than finish second again – and that is not being disrespectful to Kiyo it is just that I have had so may of them, so that is why I am sick of them.
“Win's in this class don’t come easy, but it is onwards and upwards to the Showdown. But on a positive note I finished in front of Josh twice, but I go from roughly a 100 point lead to 26 in the championship going into the Showdown, and I know that Josh feels down about only essentially getting one point today, but I have lost 74 points in effect. But that is the format of the championship, but we need to up our game.”
