Be Wiser Ducati’s Glenn Irwin bagged his third career MCE British Superbike podium finish in the second race at Donington Park yesterday.
The Northern Irishman finished in third and in the final part of the race he was caught in a four-way battle for the final rostrum spot between Tyco BMW’s Christian Iddon, JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Luke Mossey and McAMS Yamaha’s James Ellison.
In the first race Irwin admitted that he stayed back too long, but was afraid that the tyre would not last the whole distance. In the both events the Panigale racer opted for the SC1 soft front and SC0 rear Pirelli tyres.
But in race two Irwin was not holding back, and made sure that he finished better than sixth in the opening race, and his race pace was still prevalent during the final laps as he was still able to lap mostly in the 1’29’s. Irwin was also the only Be Wiser bike on the grid, as his team-mate Shane Byrne was declared unfit after having concussion due to a big warm-up crash.
“I stayed back too long in race one and in race two the boys said to go the whole way, and I was not too sure with the tyre going the whole way and I sat back and I saw Christian catching Ellison for a podium position and James kept those guys behind him,” said Irwin at the circuit.
“I managed to bag the 29’s in during that stage in the race. I started the last lap and I thought about the overtake and I got by him and massive credit to the team. It hasn’t been an easy weekend for anyone in racing with the heartache yesterday and for us it was a bit more personal with Shakey bring injured.”
