Smiths of Gloucester Triumph’s Glen Richards took a remarkable Motorpoint British Supersport victory, coming through from 23rd on the grid to pass his Championship rival Jack Kennedy on the last lap.
Fellow Adelaide man Billy McConnell took the holeshot from pole position but was quickly nudged out of the way by Gearlink Kawasaki’s Ben Wilson. Luke Mossey then took the lead from Ben Wilson but as last year’s runner-up tried to retake the lead, he tucked the front at the Melbourne Loop and the Gearlink man’s race was over.
Behind the leaders, both Kennedy and Richards were beginning to make their way up to front, with Richards setting multiple fastest laps of the race. Kennedy made his way up to second and Richards to the third as the duo started to chase down the 1.5 second advantage Mossey had.
With three laps remaining Kennedy caught and then moved past Mossey to take the lead who was then passed by his team-mate Richards. As Mossey tried to hang onto the duo ahead of him, he pushed too hard, crashing out at Goddards on the penultimate lap out of a podium place.
Kennedy held a defensive line throughout the last lap but left a gaping hole as the pair moved towards the Foggy Esses. The 2011 EVO Champion took full advantage of the gap and moved past the Dubliner on the brakes. Kennedy was unable to reply and Richards closed the Mar-Train Yamaha rider’s championship lead down to just 10 points as they leave Donington Park.
Christian Iddon beat McConnell and Glenn Irwin to the last podium spot after a race long battle and Richard Cooper brought his TAG Triumph through to sixth place. Pauli Pekkanen beat his team-mate Luke Jones to seventh place with Taylor Mackenzie and Sam Hornsey rounding out the top ten.
