Ellison left ‘devastated’ by Brands horror crash

GBmoto Kawasaki’s James Ellison has been left devastated by the Brands Hatch horror crash which saw him fracture his right hip and potentially put an end to his 2014 MCE British Superbike title hopes.

The Kendal man got straight up from the incident at Dingle Dell where the rear wheel of his ZX-10R touched the grass, slid and then pinged him off before making a beeline for Shane Byrne, who stayed on despite some contact (see below).

Ellison said that as soon as he stood up, he knew exactly what injury he had sustained and what it meant. The former MotoGP rider was taken to King’s Hospital in London, where he underwent surgery on an intertrochanteric fracture of the right hip last night.

“It’s bloody sore is what it is! I’m devastated to be honest. It was my mistake, I ran wide, touched the white line whch was still dampand that in turn threw my rear wheel on to grass and I was a passenger from there on. I’m glad my bike didn’t take Shane out in the process,” said Ellison, speaking to bikesportnews.com from hospital.

“We had a good crack at the championship this year and that is possibly out of the window now depending on what I can achieve through and intensive physio and hyprbaric chamber regime but I have amassed a good points score and podium credits so far, so we might still be in a position to fight for a Showdown spot.

“The doctors here haven’t yet told me how long they expect me to be out of action. I think Thruxton and Oulton Park are definitely out but after that we will just have to see how my recovery goes.

“Thanks to my team who have worked relentlessly all year to give me a phenomenal Kawasaki ZX-10R and to all the fans for their messages of support. It’s been overwhelming, it really means a lot and will spur me on to get back as soon as I can. I have a long and bumpy road ahead of but one thing you can be sure of is I will never quit!”
