Glenn Irwin 'can take a lot of confidence' from Donington Park

Two more podiums at Donington Park have given Glenn Irwin confidence after the first two rounds of the British Superbike Championship.

Despite not winning a race in the opening two rounds of the British Superbike Championship, Glenn Irwin has shown that he will be a consistent Championship contender.

At the second round of the season, the Hager PBM Ducati rider finished fourth, third and second in the three races at Donington Park.

He also believes that, in hindsight, he could have had a go at passing Bradley Ray in the final race to take his first win of the year.

"It was a good race, the guys had done a good job coming into today," Irwin said after the final race of the weekend at Donington Park.

"I had more tyre life and a better feeling with the bike, I could ride it how I wanted to ride it, and I was able to be strong over distance. The race went as planned to an extent, I was quite happy to sit with Rory [Skinner], I could see he was trying to save his tyre. He was using a bit more than me in areas, but he was good job and I was happy to sit at the same pace as him.

"I could see Brad [Ray] was pulling away, but at the same time, I had faith that I could catch him. I passed Rory at what probably was the right moment, because we were able to bridge that gap. To be able to reel in someone of Brad's level is really, really good for our confidence.

"To have the tyre, and to be able to set a lap record in the last couple of laps when the tyre dropped is something I can take a lot of confidence from. In terms of opportunities to win the race, I probably had half a chance into the chicane with three laps to go.

"I got caught out a bit as Brad braked earlier than I expected, in hindsight maybe I should have had a go. I was worried about hitting the back of him, it was one of those moments of hit Brad or react fast.

"There was a 0.9-second gap to bridge over two laps, and to get back to him, I closed in around Coppice, and maybe I did too well as I got on the gas a bit early, and it created a bit of spin. But saying that he is riding incredibly, he has good speed on his bike, and a Yamaha with speed, and a good rider is hard to beat."

Irwin is now second in the 2025 British Superbike Championship and is 12 points behind Ray and the Raceways Yamaha squad.
