PR Kawasaki's Simon Andrews has revealed that surgeons twice planned to amputate the leg he badly broke in the big Snetterton British Superbike crash a week ago and it is only because he is so physically fit that he has been able to keep it.
The Evesham rider crashed with Steve Brogan on oil left by Alex Lowes' MSS Kawasaki going into the 100mph+ Riches corner and the Liverpudlian's Fireblade caught Andrews' right leg, smashing the tibia and fibula to an extent where he will need a bone graft in the near future.
"My first operations went well although the one on Saturday went on for nine hours and I have got awful bed sores which have prevented me from sleeping properly over the last two days, plus they keep checking my circulation every hour on the hour," said Andrews, speaking to bikesportnews.com this lunchtime.
"It matters not though as I am just happy to have kept my leg. The surgeons said that had I not been so physically fit, they would have removed it as the damage would never have healed in before infection set in, so I am very grateful for that.
"I have to wait now for a bone graft from my pelvis to replace the smashed bones but that won't be for a few weeks yet. I can't wait to get out of here and home. I'm allergic to penicillin so I have had loads of different antibiotics and some of the painkillers have made me sick too! It's going to be a long recovery but it could have been worse."
